Saunders are providing working drawings and support to the contractor during the construction of a new-build 5-storey 1200 sqm office and community building next to Spitalfields Market in Whitechapel. The building replaces an existing 1960’s office block and forms part of a wider development that includes the internal restoration of the Grade 2 listed Toynbee Hall and major public realm improvements to the adjacent landscaped public square.

The lower part of the building houses the charity’s community spaces, while offices are arranged above. The envelope is enhanced through the use of brick patterning and polished concrete profiles, coloured to match the brickwork. Significant features of the development include retention and extension of the original basement, preservation and relocation of an original marble freeze and the manufacture of a tiled colonnade made up in part of off-site manufactured elements.
