Saunders Awards University of Hertfordshire Degree Show Prize

Undergraduate, Kirana Ariana Gunawan, from the University of Hertfordshire School of Creative Arts has been awarded the Saunders Prize for Best Narrative 2020. Judged by the architectural team at Saunders, the prize recognises Kirana’s outstanding concept and proposal for her project: Cyclist’s Transit Roof.

Kirana’s well-researched project explored the creation of a cycle route onto the roof of an existing building in central London, turning it into a visually-appealing, purpose-built headquarters and cycle-through shop. It is designed to be both a practical focus point and to intrigue non-cyclists; encouraging them to consider cycling in the future. The Cyclist’s Transit Roof supports Transport for London’s strategy to encourage more people to walk or cycle in London.

Annabel Lait of Saunders explained, “We were impressed by the very high standard of the work sent through to us by Principal Lecturer, Dr. Erica Liu. Kirana’s inventive design not only met the brief, it’s originality stood out and her thought process was imaginatively represented.”

Saunders is proud to be supporting the School of Creative Arts at the University of Hertfordshire and looks forward to continuing the association into the future, offering students an insight into the workings of a national architecture and urban design practice. Students will also form part of the team running a local schools programme: ‘Little Architects, Big Ideas’; which forms part of Welwyn Garden City’s centenary celebrations which have been postponed from earlier this year.
