Saunders were appointed for the detailed design and construction detailing of a new classroom block at Sherrardswood School – an independent co-educational school in Hertfordshire. The project involved the careful insertion of a two-storey building into a steeply sloping and tightly constrained site, surrounded by existing school buildings. The new building provides 4 new classrooms with associated cloakroom facilities. Most of the existing school buildings are Grade II listed and the whole site is located in a conservation area. As a result, detailed negotiations were required to satisfy the Local Planning Authority regarding the detailed design and use of materials.
