A leading London theatre operator sought to transform a series of former set-design studios, located behind one of the capital's most celebrated historic theatres, into a contemporary workplace that would support modern ways of working while preserving the building's unique character.
Our role was to secure the necessary Planning and Listed Building Consents for the sensitive conversion of these heritage spaces into a new head office. The proposals introduced agile workspaces, meeting rooms and enhanced staff facilities, carefully integrated within the existing historic fabric.
Extensive analysis of the building informed a design approach that respected and celebrated its theatrical heritage while enabling its long-term sustainable use. A key feature of the completed scheme is the new entrance, which prominently displays the original mechanical painting frames once used to create scenery for major stage productions. Throughout the office, carefully retained views into active backstage areas reinforce the building's connection to theatre-making, creating a distinctive and inspiring working environment that bridges past and present.
