Saunders leads green retrofit in St Albans, delivering energy efficient community housing

16-12-2021

Saunders is supporting the renovation and expansion of high quality, sustainable homes for local residents and people in need of temporary housing at London Colney, near St Albans.

The retrofit scheme refurbishes two neglected 1980s blocks, turning them into contemporary and environmentally-friendly one, two and three bed apartment buildings. One block will be managed by the council as temporary housing for homeless people whilst the other is for private rental.

A number of sustainable materials and technologies will be utilised including thermal upgrades to ensure the buildings are energy efficient. Each apartment will access renewable energy through onsite solar panels and air source heat pumps, and electric vehicle charging points will be installed. All this helps to reduce energy bills and makes the site more environmentally friendly: significantly reducing carbon emissions.

This project is a great example of how existing buildings can be repurposed and turned into high quality spaces that meet demanding environmental standards. The technology being installed will prolong the life of the building and reduce emissions while providing the area with much needed sustainable and energy efficient residential accommodation.
